Washington:The US plans to uphold its security commitments with Saudi Arabia in light of the renewed military confrontations involving Houthi forces in Yemen, as stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
According to Anadolu Agency, Rubio emphasized the United States' dedication to its defense and security pact with Saudi Arabia, asserting that the US intends to honor this agreement. He made this statement while preparing for a European tour, which includes visits to Iceland, Greece, and Portugal, although he did not provide specific details on operational aspects.
Rubio highlighted Riyadh's right to self-defense in response to ongoing Houthi attacks, noting that Yemeni allied forces are attempting to reclaim areas lost in previous conflicts. He also addressed the strategic importance of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, where Saudi and Yemeni troops are resisting Houthi control, describing the local counter-offensives as expected developments.
These remarks followed an announcement by Rashad al-Alimi, chair of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, regarding a military operation aimed at recapturing the capital Sanaa, with the assistance of allies, to restore state institutions from Houthi control. The Yemeni army has reported securing the Dhubab district and key positions along the strait.
While Washington has refrained from direct involvement in kinetic strikes, it continues to support the campaign by providing intelligence and advisory assistance to Saudi Arabia.
