Berlin:UK Defense Secretary Wes Streeting has criticized Iran's decision to label the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force as 'terrorist organizations,' describing it as 'bare-faced cheek.' This accusation by Tehran was a reaction to the UK's move to ban support for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Streeting made these remarks during a joint news conference in Berlin with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. He stated that Iran's labeling did not warrant a serious response and humorously suggested displaying the accusations as a 'trophy' in his home. Despite the tensions, he emphasized the importance of prioritizing diplomacy and de-escalation in addressing the challenges posed by Iran.
Streeting also highlighted broader European security concerns, noting a growing threat level not seen since the Cold War's end. He reaffirmed the UK's unwavering support for Ukraine and urged NATO allies to enhance their defense capabilities and industrial collaboration.
Additionally, discussions during the conference touched on the future of Europe's defense industry, specifically Germany's potential involvement in the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). Streeting expressed openness to German participation, provided that any decision is made collectively by the UK, Italy, and Japan. He underscored the need for a 'three plus one format' dialogue to understand Germany's military needs and ensure alignment of interests.
