Paris: The British prime minister on Monday emphasized the urgent necessity for restarting the ceasefire between the US and Iran amid ongoing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz. During a joint press conference with leaders from France, Germany, and Ukraine in Paris, Keir Starmer addressed the recent escalation and condemned Iran's actions against commercial shipping and Gulf partners.
According to Anadolu Agency, Starmer expressed his support for the negotiation process, emphasizing the UK's readiness to deploy resources to aid in the safe passage of ships through the strait. He highlighted the immediate need for the resumption of the ceasefire and negotiations to address unresolved issues, as well as ensuring unrestricted navigation in the strategically significant waterway.
The call for action follows a weekend of renewed strikes between the US and Iran, with US President Donald Trump announcing the reinstatement of a blockade on Iran. Trump also declared that ships would incur charges for safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz. The key maritime route had been effectively closed by Iran during the US-Israeli conflict that erupted in late February. Although a memorandum of understanding to end the war was signed in June, a complete reopening of the strait has yet to occur.
