Yerevan: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store engaged in discussions on Sunday focusing on strategic partnership initiatives, including a drone deal and efforts to bolster air defense systems. The meeting took place ahead of the 8th European Political Community summit set for May 4.
According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude towards Norway for its substantial support, highlighting Norway's contributions to the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, which amount to nearly $1 billion. He emphasized the critical importance of timely funding for PURL amid ongoing ballistic missile threats from Russia.
Zelenskyy also briefed Store on Ukraine's immediate needs, particularly in the energy sector, to ensure the country is well-prepared for the upcoming winter. He acknowledged Norway's willingness to assist in this regard.
In April, Ukraine and Norway formalized a defense agreement, including a focus on a drone initiative aimed at countering Shahed attacks. Zelenskyy also proposed a similar partnership with Finland, suggesting a 'Drone Deal' format during a meeting with Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.
Zelenskyy commended Finland for its decision to allocate an additional $300 million in defense support and discussed enhancing air defense capabilities with the new package. He reiterated Ukraine's readiness to share expertise in strengthening defense systems.
On a broader scale, Zelenskyy announced plans for expanding weapons exports, following approval of key details at the state level. The new 'Drone Deals' cooperation format is set to cover the production and supply of drones, missiles, and other military equipment, with technology exchange initiatives involving partners from the Middle East, Gulf region, Europe, and the Caucasus.
