UN Demands Release of 2 Gaza Flotilla Volunteers

Tehran: The United Nations: The United Nations has called for the immediate release of Global Sumud Flotilla activists, Brazilian Thiago de Avila and Spanish activist of Palestinian origin Saif Abukeshek, after an Israeli court made the decision to prolong their detention.

According to Anadolu Agency, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric addressed the issue during a news conference, stating that "they should be released," though he refrained from offering further comments on the circumstances surrounding the activists' detention.

The incident involving the Global Sumud Flotilla occurred on April 30, when Israeli forces intercepted the group near the Greek island of Crete, approximately 600 nautical miles from Gaza, a region suffering under a long-standing blockade.

Adalah, an Israeli advocacy group focusing on the rights of Palestinians within Israel, released a statement indicating that the activists' detention would continue until May 10. The group obtained the statement through Anadolu, which highlighted that the activists' lawyers argued during the hearing that the allegations against them lack substance and that their continued detention is unjustified.

Furthermore, Adalah reported that both de Avila and Abukeshek have faced "death threats" while in Israeli prisons, where they are kept in total isolation and exposed to continuous bright lighting around the clock.
