Islamabad:UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has arrived in Pakistan for a three-day official visit, according to the country's Foreign Ministry.
According to Anadolu Agency, Guterres was invited by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar. He was welcomed by Acting Foreign Secretary Nabeel Munir upon his arrival in Islamabad. The visit, taking place from October 6-8, is Guterres' first since 2022, when he visited flood-affected regions in the country.
During his stay, Guterres is scheduled to meet with several key figures, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister Dar, and army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. He will also engage with the National Disaster Management Authority to assess Pakistan's progress in disaster preparedness and resilience following the devastating floods of 2022.
Additionally, Guterres will visit the Islamabad headquarters of the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), which was established in 1949 to monitor the ceasefire between India and Pakistan in the Kashmir region.
The Secretary-General's discussions will cover various topics, including Pakistan's diplomatic and mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, highlighting Islamabad's role in facilitating negotiations between the two nations.
