UN Special Rapporteur Calls for Global Medical Boycott of Israel Over Gaza Health Crisis

NEW YORK: Francesca Albanese, the United Nations special rapporteur on Palestine, has called for a worldwide boycott by medical professionals against Israel, citing the destruction of Gaza's health care system as a principal reason. Her appeal comes amid an ongoing conflict that has severely impacted Palestinian infrastructure, particularly in the health sector.

According to Anadolu Agency, Albanese made her statement on the social media platform X, urging medical professionals globally to sever all ties with Israel. She described this move as a forceful denunciation of what she referred to as Israel's "full destruction of the Palestinian healthcare system in Gaza," which she characterized as a tool of genocide.

The ongoing conflict has led to a deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, with hospitals and clinics being overwhelmed by the violence. The health sector in Gaza is reportedly struggling due to a lack of essential medical supplies, infrastructure damage, and significant loss of life. These conditions have intensified calls for international intervention and support.

The conflict's persistence follows a Hamas attack on October 7 last year, which led to continued Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip. Despite a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire, the violence has not abated, drawing widespread condemnation from the international community.

In a significant development, the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its military actions in the region.

The situation in Gaza continues to be a focal point of international concern, with calls for accountability and a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
