Washington: The US is actively engaging in talks with Ukraine to organize a meeting in Saudi Arabia aimed at advancing peace efforts with Russia, as disclosed by US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff on Thursday. This initiative follows a letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to US President Donald Trump, which Witkoff noted was perceived as a 'positive first step.'
According to Anadolu Agency, Witkoff highlighted that Zelenskyy's letter included an apology, an acknowledgment of the substantial support the United States has provided to Ukraine, and a sense of gratitude. Witkoff shared these insights with reporters at the White House, emphasizing the constructive tone of the communication.
Witkoff revealed ongoing discussions to organize a meeting with Ukrainian officials in either Riyadh or Jeddah. The primary objective of this meeting is to establish a framework for a peace agreement and initiate a ceasefire. Expressing optimism, Witkoff stated, "I think it'll be a good meeting. I really do believe that, hopefully, that will be a good signal to the Russians, because they have been proactive, too, in wanting to get something done here."
The envoy underscored the importance of bringing the conflicting parties together to "constantly narrow the gap," aiming to bridge the differences between Ukraine and Russia. Media reports suggested that an American delegation, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Witkoff, is scheduled to travel to the Saudi capital on Tuesday.
When questioned about the prospect of a minerals deal, which could enhance US economic interests in Ukraine, Witkoff remarked, "Well, I think Zelensky has offered to sign it, and we'll see if he follows through."
Regarding the recent pause in US aid to Ukraine, Witkoff expressed hope for a resolution, stating, "I would think at some point... hopefully we get things back on track with the Ukrainians and everything resumes. That's what I would hope for."
This development comes amidst heightened tensions between the US and Ukraine following Zelenskyy's contentious meeting with Trump during a visit to Washington, after which the US announced a temporary halt in aid to Ukraine. However, recent days have shown signs of improving relations, with Waltz describing Zelenskyy's willingness to negotiate with Russia as a "positive step forward" towards ending the conflict.
