US Criticizes Iran’s Stance on Ballistic Missile Discussions as Major Issue

St. kitts: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned on Wednesday that Iran's refusal to engage in discussions regarding its ballistic missile program presents a significant challenge. Speaking to reporters during a meeting of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, Rubio emphasized the threat posed by Iran's missile capabilities.

According to Anadolu Agency, Rubio expressed concerns over Iran's persistent reluctance to address its ballistic missile activities. He highlighted that the issue is compounded by Iran's history of attempting to rebuild elements of its nuclear program, despite previous agreements to cease such activities. Rubio stressed that while Iran is not currently enriching uranium, the nation is making efforts to reach a stage where it could potentially restart its nuclear ambitions.

Rubio elaborated on Iran's military capabilities, citing the substantial number of short-range ballistic missiles that pose threats to US interests and allies in the region. He pointed out that these missiles endanger American bases in countries such as the UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain. Additionally, Rubio noted that Iran's naval forces could disrupt shipping lanes and threaten US military forces, indicating a broader range of conventional military capabilities aimed at American targets beyond nuclear weapons.

The US Secretary of State mentioned that upcoming diplomatic talks would primarily focus on Iran's nuclear program, aligning with the Trump administration's strategy of seeking diplomatic resolutions. However, Rubio cautioned that Iran's ballistic missile program remains a critical obstacle to progress.

The remarks come amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran, fueled by disagreements over Tehran's missile development and nuclear aspirations. Renewed indirect talks in Geneva aim to address these contentious issues, with Washington advocating for restrictions on both Iran's ballistic missile program and nuclear enrichment activities-a stance that Tehran has thus far resisted.
