CHICAGO: Two Democratic Party governors have initiated a coalition to counter the policies expected under the second term of President-elect Donald Trump. The group, known as Governors Safeguarding Democracy, seeks to protect state-level democratic institutions through the collective legislative, budgetary, executive, and administrative powers of its members. According to Anadolu Agency, the coalition was founded by J.B. Pritzker, the governor of Illinois, alongside Colorado Governor Jared Polis. The initiative is inspired by the Reproductive Freedom Alliance, a group that advocates for women's right to choose an abortion following the US Supreme Court's decision to delegate the matter to individual states. The group aims to foster collaboration among states to resist perceived threats to democracy. Pritzker emphasized the importance of this coalition in combatting what he described as rising autocratic tendencies while strengthening democratic institutions at both state and national levels. This initiative marks another significant national endeavor for Pritzker, who is currently contemplating his political future, including a potential 2028 presidential campaign. The unexpected victory of former President Donald Trump in the recent election has spurred Democratic activists and politicians to mobilize efforts to mitigate potential impacts of his upcoming term.
