US Embassy in Iraq Warns of Continued Threats from Iran-Aligned Militias

Baghdad: The US Embassy in Iraq issued a warning on Tuesday, highlighting that "Iraqi terrorist militias aligned with Iran" are continuing to plot attacks against US citizens and targets within the country. The embassy's statement, shared on the US social media platform X, underscores the persistent threats posed by these groups.

According to Anadolu Agency, the embassy expressed concerns that certain elements associated with the Iraqi government are actively providing political, financial, and operational support to these militias. In response to the ongoing threats, the embassy urgently advised US citizens to avoid traveling to Iraq for any reason and recommended immediate departure for those currently in the country.

The statement further clarified that while the US Mission in Iraq remains operational under an ordered departure status to assist US citizens, significant security risks necessitate that Americans refrain from attempting to visit the Embassy in Baghdad or the Consulate General in Erbil. Instead, it urged them to communicate with officials through electronic means.

The warning comes amid heightened regional tensions following US and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28, which led to retaliatory actions from Tehran targeting Israel and US allies in the Gulf, as well as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Although a ceasefire was mediated by Pakistan and took effect on April 8, talks in Islamabad failed to secure a lasting resolution. The truce was subsequently extended by US President Donald Trump without a definitive end date.
