Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Thursday appointed Anton Kovalskyi as the acting prosecutor general after parliament approved the dismissal of Ruslan Kravchenko on September 15. Kovalskyi, who currently heads the Khmelnytskyi Regional Prosecutor's Office, was appointed through a presidential decree.

According to Anadolu Agency, Kravchenko submitted his resignation on September 7 amid an investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) into alleged corruption involving officials at the Prosecutor General's Office. NABU, along with the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO), announced on September 5 that they had uncovered a suspected criminal organization led by a department head at the Prosecutor General's Office. The organization's members are suspected of taking bribes from fraudulent call centers and laundering money.

Kravchenko has denied any wrongdoing and has accused NABU Director Semen Kryvonos of document forgery. Additionally, Kravchenko claimed to have issued a second notice of suspicion against a person close to SAPO head Oleksandr Klymenko. The allegations suggested that the individual had influenced judges at Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court, offered them unlawful benefits, and helped individuals evade military mobilization.

NABU and SAPO have rejected these allegations, stating that no notice of suspicion had been served on Kryvonos. They described Kravchenko's claims as part of an attack on the independence of anti-corruption bodies.
