Accra:Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned on Sunday that the United States formally siding with Russian President Vladimir Putin would be a 'historic mistake.' Despite this, Zelenskyy expressed that he still considers US President Donald Trump an ally, stating on NBC News' Meet the Press program, 'We want to trust him.'
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump recently waived new sanctions against Russia, citing national interests in an executive order. This decision followed an agreement with Putin to introduce significant amounts of Russian diesel fuel into the global market amid rising fuel prices.
Zelenskyy revealed that US intelligence sharing with Ukraine was momentarily interrupted, affecting the flow of information regarding incoming ballistic missiles. Additionally, restrictions were imposed on the Starlink satellite internet network, crucial for intercepting jet-powered drones. Ukrainian officials suspect that SpaceX's limitation of Starlink services was prompted by a 'message from American government.'
Despite some progress on intelligence sharing, Zelenskyy noted that constraints remain on Ukraine's use of Starshield, the military version of Starlink. When questioned about whether Trump or SpaceX CEO Elon Musk directly influenced these decisions, he speculated that 'both' were involved but lacked confirmation. He suggested that if Trump were to lift the restrictions, the situation would return to normal.
Zelenskyy addressed Trump's comment about him being 'more difficult to deal with than Putin,' asserting his honesty with the US president. He remarked on the importance of having transparent partners rather than deceptive ones, even if they appear friendly.
He also expressed disappointment over the waiver of sanctions linked to legislation named after the late Senator Lindsey Graham, a known advocate for Ukraine. Zelenskyy mentioned plans to discuss the situation with US negotiators and remained hopeful for a meeting soon, expressing willingness to engage despite challenging circumstances.
