California Governor Advocates Conditioning US Military Aid to Israel

New Hampshire:California Governor Gavin Newsom stated that US military aid to Israel should be "conditioned," a stance he described as increasingly aligning with the Democratic Party's consensus. Newsom made these remarks while campaigning in New Hampshire, considering a potential presidential run in 2028.

According to Anadolu Agency, Newsom emphasized that the aid must be conditional, citing issues like settler violence in the occupied West Bank and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's policies, which he believes undermine the prospects for a two-state solution. He criticized Netanyahu for isolating himself from the global community and the American public, stating the damage caused is significant.

Newsom referred to Israel's conflict in Gaza as a "moral catastrophe" but did not specify which types of military assistance should be conditioned. He mentioned the importance of differentiating between defensive systems like Iron Dome and offensive weapons. He asserted that US aid should uphold human rights principles, including adherence to the Leahy framework, which restricts US funding to foreign military units implicated in severe human rights violations.

His comments come amid increasing Democratic opposition to arms transfers to Israel. Earlier this year, most Senate Democrats opposed a weapons sale, and over 100 House Democrats voted against another measure in July. Newsom noted that Israel's upcoming elections on October 27 could impact the ongoing debate.

While Newsom has previously criticized Netanyahu, he has expressed support for Israel, demonstrated by his visit to the country in 2023 to meet survivors of the Hamas attack. He also acknowledged regretting his past description of Israel as an "apartheid state."
