Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of the Republic of Austria Alexander Schallenberg will pay Cyprus an official visit on Thursday at the invitation of the Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos. According to an official press release, the two Ministers will hold a tete a tete meeting, to be followed by extended consultations with the participation of delegations of the two Ministries. The discussions will focus among other things, on bilateral relations, the Cyprus issue as well as other regional and international developments. After the discussions, the two Ministers will make statements to the press. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Columbia as his personal envoy f or Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
