According to data released today by the Cyprus News Agency, the Social Welfare Services Department has experienced a significant increase in human trafficking cases. Between January 1 and June 30, 2024, the department handled 53 reports of potential trafficking incidents. Moreover, from January 1, 2024, to July 31, 2024, seven trafficking victims were admitted to a Social Welfare Services shelter. These figures underscore a concerning trend, with the department recording 147 cases in 2022 and over 149 in 2023. The number of shelter admissions fluctuated, from 20 in 2022 to more than 14 in 2023. Despite the transfer of human trafficking policies to the newly established Deputy Ministry of Immigration, the Social Welfare Services remain the primary responders to initial trafficking reports. Eftichios Hadjichristodoulou, head of the department, emphasized the importance of their role in detecting and assisting victims. Hadjichristodoulou acknowledged the diverse nature of human trafficking and the department 's commitment to providing specialized training to its staff. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance the operations of the trafficking victims shelter. Feedback from former shelter residents through a survey has been instrumental in identifying areas for improvement and refining the programs offered by the Social Welfare Services.
