Cyprus and Greece sign transplants agreements

Cyprus and Greece signed on Thursday two agreements in the field of transplants and cross-renal transplants. The agreements were signed in Athens between Health Ministers of Cyprus and Greece, Michalis Damianos and Adonis Georgiades. Damianos said that the signing of these agreements reaffirms the commitment of both governments to comprehensive and equitable health care, ensuring that no citizen, regardless of the rarity of their case, will be left without the necessary care and treatment. He noted that the right to health is non-negotiable, adding that transplants are saving lives and improving patients' quality of life. The Cypriot Minister explained that the cross-kidney transplants agreement is expected to significantly increase treatment options for patients suffering from kidney failure, allowing the exchange of organs between the two countries, in cases of donor and recipient incompatibility. The second agreement is about lung transplants and Damianos said that Cypriot patients will be able to und ergo a lung transplant at the Onasseio Cardiac Surgery Center in Athens. Greek Minister Adonis Georgiades said that this agreement marks the beginning of many more to follow. He added that the cooperation between Greece and Cyprus sends messages to all Cypriots that Greece is here to help in any difficult moment. Deputy Minister Marios Themistokleous pointed out that the specific agreements are proof in practice of the very close cooperation that has existed for years. He said that the field of transplants is one of the most important fields that can save patients' lives and also drastically improve their quality of life. Source: Cyprus News Agency
