Iraqi Army Declares Syria Border ‘Fully Secured’ After Assad’s Ouster

BAGHDAD: The Iraqi army announced on Thursday that the country's border with Syria is "fully secured" following the removal of Bashar al-Assad's regime. This development comes in the wake of anti-regime forces capturing the Syrian capital, Damascus, prompting Assad to flee to Russia after a prolonged civil conflict. According to Anadolu Agency, Lieutenant General Abdul-Amir Yarallah, the Army Chief of Staff, confirmed that the Iraqi-Syrian border has been reinforced by a defensive line consisting of the army and the pro-government Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), also known as Hashd Al-Shaabi. This strategic reinforcement aims to maintain stability and prevent any cross-border issues in the aftermath of Syria's political upheaval. Yarallah noted that there has been no friction reported between Iraqi troops and forces on the Syrian side of the border, indicating a stable situation along the frontier. The recent military developments in Syria marked the end of Assad's 13-year rule amidst a civil war, as ant i-regime forces took control of Damascus. Assad's departure to Russia also signifies the conclusion of 53 years of his family's governance in Syria.
