TROMSO: Mohamed Jabaly, a filmmaker from Gaza, has traversed a path marked by conflict, resilience, and storytelling. Born amidst the first intifada and coming of age during the second, Jabaly's life has been indelibly shaped by the turmoil of his homeland. According to Anadolu Agency, Jabaly's connection to Tromso began in 2013 when a Norwegian delegation screened one of his short films in Gaza, establishing a bond between the two cities. In 2014, he received an invitation to visit Tromso for a film festival, a plan disrupted by the 51-day conflict in Gaza that summer. As the situation unfolded, Jabaly documented the experiences of ambulance crews, footage that would form his first feature documentary, Ambulance. His eventual arrival in Tromso was meant to be brief, but circumstances extended his stay to seven years due to the closure of the Rafah border.
Transitioning to life in Norway presented its own set of challenges. Jabaly described his first winter as an eye-opening experience, both physically and emotionally. The cold and darkness were compounded by the isolation from his family and friends. With limited resources, he relied on the kindness of friends for accommodation and volunteered at local festivals to integrate into his new community.
Jabaly's second documentary, Life is Beautiful, explores themes of displacement and the identity crisis faced by stateless individuals.
