Tunis: The Tunisian authorities have announced that 7,250 irregular migrants voluntarily returned from Tunisia to their countries in 2024.

According to Anadolu Agency, by the end of last year, Tunisia successfully secured the voluntary return of these migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. Mohamed Ben Ayed, the secretary of state to the Tunisian foreign minister, revealed this information during a parliamentary session, as stated in a release by the Tunisian parliament late Wednesday.

He emphasized that this achievement was made possible through Tunisia's coordination with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and neighboring countries, Algeria and Libya. The senior official highlighted "the positive development in the level of coordination and cooperation with the neighboring countries," which has contributed to reducing the number of irregular migrants arriving in Tunisia on their journey to Europe.

Facing mounting economic and political challenges, Tunisia has emerged as a significant departure point for irregular migration to Europe. Nearly every week, Tunisian authorities report thwarting attempts to migrate.
