Antalya: Chinese scientists have developed a novel wearable artificial intelligence (AI) device to assist blind people with navigation, state media reported on Tuesday. The system integrates visual, auditory, and tactile feedback, using AI algorithms to scan the surrounding environment, thereby enhancing the independence of users in daily life.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Beijing-based Xinhua News reported that the findings were published on Monday in the journal Nature Machine Intelligence. The device sends signals to guide the wearers through movements, object handling, and other visual tasks when they approach obstacles or objects.
Led by Gu Leilei, an associate professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, this user-friendly assistive system was designed in collaboration with researchers from Fudan University, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, East China Normal University, and other partners. The system is equipped with a camera to capture visual data and enhances functionality through advanced AI algorithms and hardware integration.
The innovative device uses AI to analyze the surroundings, detect obstacles and key targets, and then deliver instructions through bone-conduction headphones and wrist-mounted electronic skin patches.
