Los Angeles: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday that films using artificial intelligence (AI) will remain eligible for top Oscar awards under newly updated voting and campaigning rules. The Academy said the use of generative AI or other digital tools in filmmaking will 'neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination.' However, it emphasized that films with significant human involvement are preferred.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Academy and each branch will evaluate the achievement, considering the extent to which a human was central to the creative authorship when selecting award-winning movies. Generative AI, which employs deep-learning models to produce high-quality content such as text and images, has been instrumental in the creation of several award-winning films earlier this year.

The role of AI in filmmaking prompted controversy after Adrien Brody won Best Actor for his performance in "The Brutalist" at the March Oscars. The film, with 10 nominations, utilized generative AI to enhance Brody's Hungarian accent, sparking debates over the ethical ramifications of AI use in the industry. Other films, including "Emilia Perez" and "Dune: Part Two," have also integrated AI tools for various post-production adjustments.
