London: UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband on Thursday inaugurated a significant Energy Security Summit in London, stressing the critical need for international collaboration to secure affordable and reliable energy access worldwide. According to Anadolu Agency, Miliband addressed a gathering of international energy leaders, highlighting the economic and strategic advantages of transitioning to clean energy sources amidst global instability. He emphasized the necessity for nations to work together to tackle existing energy challenges, framing the shift to clean energy as crucial not only for the climate but also for national and global stability. Miliband reflected on the impact of geopolitical events, particularly Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which resulted in skyrocketing fossil fuel prices that adversely affected family, business, and public finances. He pointed out that the UK, like many other countries, is a price taker in the international fossil fuel markets, underscoring the need for a transition to m ore stable energy sources. Describing clean energy advocates as the "optimists," Miliband outlined a vision for a future where domestically produced, low-carbon energy bolsters the UK's resilience. He stated that the UK's commitment to low-carbon power extends beyond the climate imperative, seeing it as a crucial path to achieving energy security domestically. Miliband also connected the UK's energy strategy with broader international objectives, asserting that true international security is unattainable without energy security. He recalled the establishment of the International Energy Agency (IEA) in response to the 1973 oil crisis, noting that although the challenges have evolved, the IEA's foundational principle of nations collaborating to ensure a continuous and affordable energy supply remains relevant today.
