Paris: A spokesperson for the French Foreign Ministry has indicated that France is contemplating sanctions against Israel, contingent on discussions at both European and United Nations levels. This announcement came during a media briefing on Thursday, as articulated by spokesman Christophe Lemoine.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lemoine emphasized France's traditional stance, which includes condemning the closure of the Gaza Strip to humanitarian aid. He clarified that while sanctions against Israel are possible, any decision would be made collaboratively at the European or UN level. Lemoine reiterated France's long-standing support for a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, aligning with the views expressed by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Lemoine stressed the necessity of recognizing both Israel and a Palestinian state to achieve a viable political solution. He highlighted that President Macron has consistently supported this perspective, emphasizing that recognition of the Palestinian state should occur at an appropriate time. Lemoine argued that a political solution is essential for ensuring the security of Israel, the rights of Palestinians, and regional stability.

He voiced opposition to any forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, labeling such actions as violations of international law and obstacles to a two-state solution. Lemoine further criticized the closure of the Gaza Strip, which he described as creating significant challenges for the delivery of humanitarian aid. He reiterated France's call for Israel to reopen Gaza's crossings to allow the free passage of essential supplies.

Since March 2, Israel has maintained a blockade on Gaza's crossings, preventing vital supplies from reaching the enclave. This situation has been exacerbated by the killing of over 51,000 Palestinians in the region since October 2023, the majority of whom were women and children.
