Mexico City: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her government has filed a lawsuit against Google for altering the name "Gulf of Mexico" to "Gulf of America" on its US-based maps. This announcement was made during a media briefing at the National Palace in Mexico City.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sheinbaum stated that the Mexican government had previously cautioned Google about this issue, but their concerns were not addressed. "Google has already been sued. A preliminary ruling has been issued, and we are currently awaiting the outcome," she said.

Sheinbaum clarified that Mexico does not object to the name "Gulf of America" being used for the section of the Gulf adjacent to US shores. However, she stressed that Google should not label the entire Gulf in this manner, as it is an international matter. She insisted that Google should use "Gulf of America" only for the areas corresponding to US territory, while "Gulf of Mexico" should be retained for regions bordering Mexico and Cuba.

Sheinbaum also mentioned that this topic had not been discussed in her phone conversations with US President Donald Trump. The name change follows an executive order signed by Trump on January 20, directing the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America." Google implemented this name change on its map platform on February 11.
