Berlin: Germany's new Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Saturday described the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip as 'unbearable'. He made these remarks before his upcoming visit to Israel and Palestine, where he plans to assess the situation firsthand.

According to Anadolu Agency, Wadephul expressed concerns about the ongoing conflict, which has intensified since March. He plans to inquire about the strategic objectives behind the fighting and has called for Hamas to cease hostilities and release all hostages. He further emphasized the necessity of cease-fire negotiations to alleviate the ongoing crisis.

Wadephul highlighted the importance of a stable political and economic framework in the West Bank to curb the spread of hatred and extremism. His forthcoming discussions aim to support the Palestinian administration in implementing essential reforms and addressing issues related to Israel's settlement activities.

He reiterated his belief that a two-state solution offers the best possibility for enduring peace and security between Israel and its neighbors, asserting that this path should not be obstructed. Wadephul also reaffirmed Germany's longstanding commitment to Israel's security, noting that, even 80 years after the Holocaust, it remains a fundamental aspect of German state policy.

Marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel, Wadephul referred to this relationship as a 'precious gift' for Germans, emphasizing Germany's clear support for Israel. During his visit, he is scheduled to meet with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and families of hostages held by Hamas. He will also hold talks with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa in Ramallah.
