Moscow: Russia claimed on Tuesday that it downed more than 2,300 drones launched by Ukraine over the past week, as both Moscow and Kyiv accused each other of large-scale airstrikes for three consecutive nights.
According to Anadolu Agency, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday claimed that over 900 attack drones were launched against his country in the past three days, alongside ballistic and cruise missiles, resulting in over 20 fatalities as reported by local authorities, including those in the capital, Kyiv. Zelenskyy stated in a video address that these actions have no military logic and described it as a political choice by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia to continue the war and destruction.
Meanwhile, Russia reported increased drone activity from Ukraine, with some drones reportedly intercepted as they approached Moscow. US President Donald Trump commented on the situation on Sunday, describing Putin as having gone 'absolutely CRAZY,' which the Kremlin attributed to an 'emotional overload' response.
A statement by the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that between 8 pm on May 20 (1700GMT) and 8 am this morning (0500GMT), Russian air defenses intercepted 2,331 Ukrainian drones, with 1,465 shot down outside the area Moscow refers to as its 'special military operation.' The statement accused Kyiv of using drones and Western-made missiles to increase attacks on civilian targets in Russia since May 20. In response, Moscow claimed it struck only military facilities and military-industrial complex enterprises in Ukraine.
The statement further accused Kyiv of taking provocative steps to disrupt peace talks to end the war, allegedly supported by 'certain European countries,' without providing further details. The Russian military pledged to continue 'massive and group strikes in response to any terrorist attacks and provocations,' listing multiple attacks launched on Ukraine during this period. Ukrainian authorities have not yet commented on Russia's claims.
