Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will engage with both the United States and China amidst the intensifying geopolitical rivalry in the Asia-Pacific region. Anwar made this statement during a news conference following the annual ASEAN summit held in Kuala Lumpur.
According to Anadolu Agency, Anwar emphasized the importance of maintaining relations with both superpowers, stating, "That's what I made clear. to continue to engage both with the United States and China, at the same time with other countries." The summit also included a meeting with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and a trilateral session with China. Anwar revealed that he had extended a proposal for a joint summit with the US to President Donald Trump, reiterating that the bloc is not favoring any side.
China remains ASEAN's largest trading partner, while several ASEAN members are in discussions with the US over tariff agreements. Anwar highlighted the bloc's consensus to ensure that decisions made during these negotiations should not disadvantage any other country. "ASEAN is focused on the welfare, wellbeing of their people, economic relations, trade, and investments," Anwar stated, underscoring the bloc's commitment to balanced international relations.
Anwar also addressed the South China Sea dispute, acknowledging the complexity of the issue. He noted that while immediate solutions are unlikely, the potential for "real, meaningful, and positive engagement" exists. This approach aligns with ASEAN's broader strategy of fostering economic cooperation and maintaining stability in the region.
