London: More than 300 public figures from the arts and media sectors have called upon the British government to end its 'complicity' in Gaza. In an open letter addressed to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, obtained by Sky News, the signatories urge immediate action to halt the UK's involvement in the ongoing conflict.
According to Anadolu Agency, the letter features signatures from notable personalities such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Dua Lipa, Annie Lennox, Gary Lineker, Paloma Faith, and Lena Headey, alongside leading doctors, academics, campaign groups, and a Holocaust survivor. The initiative, spearheaded by refugee charity Choose Love, accuses the British government of allowing arms sales to Israel and issuing licenses for these transactions, demanding an immediate suspension.
The letter further calls for immediate humanitarian access for aid agencies and urges the British government to commit to brokering a ceasefire for 'the children of Gaza.' It highlights the dire situation of starving children in Gaza while food and medicine remain within reach yet inaccessible. The letter questions the moral stance of the UK government, imploring Prime Minister Starmer to choose between complicity in war crimes or taking courageous action.
This appeal follows a similar call from over 800 judges and lawyers who urged the British government to take reasonable steps to 'prevent and punish genocide.' Despite international pleas for a ceasefire, the Israeli army has continued its offensive in Gaza since October 2023, resulting in the deaths of over 54,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children. Aid agencies have cautioned about the looming risk of famine among the more than 2 million residents of the enclave.
The situation escalated further last November when the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice concerning its actions against civilians in the enclave.
