Seoul: South Korean and Australian leaders agreed on Thursday to strengthen ties in the defense and critical minerals sectors, according to local media reports.

According to Anadolu Agency, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung spoke by phone with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The two sides agreed to enhance cooperation in defense, arms, and critical minerals, as reported by Yonhap News Agency, citing Lee's spokesperson.

This marks the first telephonic conversation between the two leaders since President Lee assumed office last week. In addition to defense and minerals collaboration, Lee and Albanese committed to improving communication and cooperation to address the North Korean nuclear issue. They also agreed to collaborate on ensuring the success of the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju, South Korea, later this year.
