Sydney: Australian researchers have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model that can decipher words and sentences from brainwaves detected by a wearable cap, opening up a new frontier in medical science, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported on Monday. This innovation not only aids patients with cognition but also has the potential to transform human-computer interactions.
According to Anadolu Agency, the pioneering AI model was developed by expert Daniel Leong, PhD student Charles Zhou, and his supervisor Chin-Teng Lin at the GrapheneX-Human-centric Artificial Intelligence Center, University of Technology Sydney. The team utilized deep learning to translate brain signals from electroencephalogram (EEG) readings into specific words. Lin explained that, at this stage, the model learned from a limited collection of words and sentences, simplifying the detection of individual words.
Researchers are currently recruiting more participants to read texts while wearing the EEG cap to further refine the model's capabilities. They also aim to explore the model's use for facilitating communication between two people.
According to Mohit Shivdasani, a bioelectronics expert at the University of New South Wales, researchers have long sought patterns in biological signals. AI now enables the recognition of brainwave patterns previously unidentified. Shivdasani noted that AI, particularly when used in implantable devices, could rapidly adapt brainwaves to individual task completion methods.
