Tehran: The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) on Sunday condemned the US attack on Iranian nuclear sites as 'illegal.' The ICAN, in a statement, urged the US to halt its "illegal" military actions against Iran and return to diplomacy.

According to Anadolu Agency, ICAN's Executive Director Melissa Parke stated, "By joining Israel's attack on Iran, the US is also breaking international law." Parke emphasized the importance of resolving concerns over Tehran's nuclear program through diplomatic efforts rather than military action. She highlighted that US intelligence agencies assess Iran is not pursuing nuclear weapons, making the attack a senseless act that could disrupt international efforts in nuclear non-proliferation.

Parke criticized the US for abandoning diplomatic channels before Israel's use of unlawful force, contending that such actions increase regional and global danger. She pointed out that striking nuclear installations contravenes international law and poses risks of radioactive contamination harmful to human health and the environment. Parke called for the US to cease military actions and prioritize diplomacy.

The situation in the region worsened following US President Donald Trump's announcement on Sunday about the "very successful" US airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites. The US military employed B-2 stealth bombers and submarine-launched cruise missiles targeting Iran's Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan facilities.

In response to the US strikes, Iran appealed to the UN Security Council for an emergency meeting to condemn the US actions and hold violators of international law accountable. The tensions escalated on June 13 when Israel initiated airstrikes on Iranian sites, resulting in retaliatory strikes from Tehran. Israeli authorities reported that Iranian missile attacks have caused at least 25 deaths and hundreds of injuries. In contrast, the Iranian Health Ministry reported 430 fatalities and over 3,500 injuries due to the Israeli assault.
