Ankara: China on Monday criticized a speech made by Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te on Sunday, describing it as a reflection of Lai's persistent Taiwan 'independence narrative.'

According to Anadolu Agency, Chen Binhua, a spokesman for China's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, expressed these views during a news conference. He labeled the speech as deceptive, accusing it of distorting history and promoting the concept of 'Taiwan independence.' Chen stated that the speech attempted to create a narrative for Taiwan's independence.

The comments from Chen Binhua were in response to regional leader Lai Ching-te's speech, in which he emphasized Taipei's 'sovereignty' and countered China's claims over the island. Lai argued that Taiwan fulfills the criteria of a sovereign state, which include having a permanent population, defined territory, a government, and the ability to engage with other nations, despite not being a UN member.

Lai reiterated that Taiwan is a sovereign state and not subordinate to the People's Republic of China, declaring, 'We are an independent country.' This stance underscores the ongoing tension between China, which views Taiwan as a breakaway province, and Taipei, which maintains its independence.
