Brussels: The European Union this week will finalize its latest package of sanctions targeting Russia, as confirmed by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Monday. "By the end of this week, we aim to approve the 18th package of sanctions on Russia," Kallas announced following a Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels.

According to Anadolu Agency, Kallas highlighted that a "tough new oil price cap" on Russian oil remains under consideration. She expressed satisfaction with the progress on military support for Ukraine, mentioning that 80% of the pledges required for the 2 million round initiative have been fulfilled this year.

Kallas acknowledged ongoing efforts to achieve unanimous support within the EU, despite objections from Hungary and Slovakia. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto had previously announced on X that both countries opposed the sanctions package due to concerns over energy security and exemptions related to Russian oil.

Beyond the sanctions, Kallas mentioned discussions regarding Israel's compliance with Article 2 of the Israel-EU Association Agreement. The EU's focus is on humanitarian aid access and achieving a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Kallas stressed that the review aims to improve conditions for Gazans and is not intended to punish Israel.

Addressing the conflict between Israel and Iran, Kallas emphasized the EU's stance against Iran's development of nuclear weapons and urged for diplomatic negotiations to prevent further escalation. She also noted the potential risks associated with military actions and the possibility of regional spillover effects, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Lastly, Kallas expressed concern over the situation in Georgia, citing increasing repression and attacks on opposition leaders and media. She reaffirmed the EU's readiness to consider further measures against those responsible for these actions.
