Israel: Israel called on the three European signatories of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran on Wednesday to reimpose sanctions on Tehran after it suspended cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to Anadolu Agency, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar urged Germany, France, and the UK-collectively known as the E3 countries-to activate the Snapback mechanism and reinstate all sanctions against Iran. This mechanism allows the signatories of the nuclear deal to reimpose all UN sanctions if Iran violates its commitments under the agreement.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a law on Wednesday requiring the suspension of cooperation with the IAEA, a move that Sa'ar labeled as 'scandalous.' He emphasized that Iran's decision marks a complete renunciation of its international nuclear obligations and commitments. Sa'ar further insisted that the international community must act decisively and use all available means to halt Iran's nuclear ambitions.

The call for sanctions comes against the backdrop of historical tensions, notably when former US President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from the nuclear deal in 2018 and reimposed sanctions aimed at curbing Iran's economy and regional influence. In 2020, the US made two requests to the UN to trigger the Snapback mechanism due to Iran's alleged non-compliance with the nuclear agreement. These requests were later canceled by former President Joe Biden in 2021, who lifted the sanctions imposed by his predecessor.

Iran's decision to end cooperation with the IAEA intensifies the existing tensions between Tehran and the UN nuclear watchdog, especially concerning monitoring access and transparency following recent military confrontations with Israel and the US. The conflict escalated into a 12-day military exchange starting June 13, with Israel launching air strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, prompting Tehran to retaliate with missile and drone strikes, and subsequent US bombings of three Iranian nuclear sites.
