Taipei: Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has initiated a nationwide campaign aimed at recalling opposition party lawmakers.

According to Anadolu Agency, the campaign was launched on Friday, targeting the main opposition Kuomintang (KMT) party's 26 lawmakers through controversial recall votes.

The campaign features a 16-day tour by foot and motorcade, which began in the eastern county of Hualien. This initiative comes ahead of the recall votes scheduled for July 26 and August 23. The ruling DPP has enlisted its Secretary-General Lin Yu-chang and political donor Robert Tsao to spearhead the campaign efforts.

Tsao has accused KMT lawmakers of collaborating with China in an alleged attempt to "paralyze" Taiwan's Legislative Yuan, the nation's unicameral legislature. In response, the KMT's Hualien chapter has issued a statement accusing the ruling party of attempting to "purge the opposition."

The regional leader of Taiwan, William Lai Ching-te, who is also affiliated with the DPP, faces accusations of attempting to purge the KMT, reflecting the heightened political tensions on the island.
