Washington: The US State Department has revoked the Foreign Terrorist Organization designation of the al-Nusrah Front group, also known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), as per an unpublished Federal Register notice on Monday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in the notice dated June 23 that the designation of al-Nusrah Front, also known as Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, would be revoked in consultation with the Attorney General and the Secretary of the Treasury. This decision is scheduled for publication on Tuesday and will take effect immediately.

Rubio explained that this move follows the announced dissolution of HTS and the Syrian government's commitment to combat terrorism in all its forms. The action is intended to build on the momentum of the June 30 Executive Order 'Providing for the Revocation of Syria Sanctions' and acknowledges the positive actions taken by the new Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

HTS had been on the US Foreign Terrorist Organization list since 2018, when it was included as part of the designation of its predecessor, the al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra. This decision aligns with President Donald Trump's earlier move to terminate US sanctions and the national emergency related to Syria.

Trump had previously announced at an investment forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on May 13, that he would lift the 'brutal and crippling' sanctions on Syria. Following this announcement, he held a historic meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, marking the first meeting between US and Syrian leaders in 25 years.

The political landscape in Syria shifted dramatically when Bashar al-Assad, who ruled the country for nearly a quarter century, fled to Russia on December 8, 2024, marking the end of the Baath Party's decades-long rule that began in 1963.
