Kuala lumpur: The US and Malaysia have taken a significant step in their diplomatic relations by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on strategic civil nuclear cooperation. This development was announced through a statement from the US State Department.

According to Anadolu Agency, the signing ceremony in Kuala Lumpur was attended by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan. This event marked Rubio's first visit to the region since assuming office. During the ceremony, Hasan expressed Malaysia's readiness to enter negotiations on a 123 agreement with the US, which pertains to peaceful nuclear cooperation between the US and other countries.

Hasan emphasized the importance of the MoU, stating that it represents a crucial step in strengthening the Malaysia-United States comprehensive partnership. He highlighted that the agreement is expected to contribute to energy security, drive economic growth, and enhance Malaysia's capacity to harness nuclear energy safely and responsibly.

Rubio described the signing as an important example of peaceful nuclear cooperation, emphasizing its significance as a signal to the world about the availability and potential of civil nuclear cooperation. He noted that this agreement serves as a model for other countries interested in civil nuclear programs and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with a close partner like Malaysia.
