Trump Announces Plan to ‘Substantially’ Raise Tariffs on India Over Russian Oil Resale

Washington: US President Donald Trump announced plans to significantly increase tariffs on India, accusing the nation of generating profits by reselling Russian oil. The statement was made via a post on Truth social media, where Trump expressed his disapproval of India's actions in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump criticized India for purchasing substantial quantities of Russian oil and subsequently selling it on the open market for significant profits. He expressed concern that India's actions indicate indifference to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the casualties resulting from what he termed the "Russian War Machine." In response, Trump declared his intention to raise tariffs on Indian imports to the United States, although he did not provide specifics regarding the scale or timing of these proposed tariff increases.

This announcement follows previous warnings from Trump about potential penalties for India due to its sustained energy and defense relations with Moscow. Notably, Russian oil comprised between 35% to 40% of India's overall oil imports last year. As of now, the Indian government has not issued an official response to Trump's latest statements.
