Seoul: South Korea on Tuesday reported that North Korea has not taken steps to dismantle its border loudspeakers, despite Seoul's initiative to remove its own in an effort to decrease tensions, according to local media.

According to Anadolu Agency, Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson Col. Lee Sung-jun noted that as of Tuesday, there were no movements by the North Korean military to dismantle their loudspeakers, as reported by Yonhap News Agency. "Only daily activities were detected," Lee stated during a regular press briefing.

His comments followed South Korea's commencement of dismantling its propaganda loudspeakers along the border with North Korea on Monday. This action is part of a strategy to alleviate inter-Korean tensions.

The decision to dismantle came less than two months after President Lee Jae Myung ordered a halt to loudspeaker broadcasts in front-line areas. This was part of broader efforts to improve relations with North Korea.

South Korea had resumed the loudspeaker campaign for the first time in six years in June last year. This was a response to North Korea's persistent launch of trash-carrying balloons across the heavily fortified border.
