Bamako: Mali's former Prime Minister Choguel Kokalla Maiga was placed under a detention warrant by the Supreme Court's investigating chamber for alleged misuse of public funds. Maiga was taken into custody from August 11 to 19 at the Economic and Financial Division before appearing before the Supreme Court's investigating chamber, according to his lawyer Cheick Oumar Konare.

According to Anadolu Agency, the court officially informed Maiga of the charges related to the misappropriation of public property, as outlined in the prosecutor general's indictment, and decided to place him under a detention warrant. Konare stated that Maiga remains calm and believes that a politician must be prepared for any eventualities, including prison and death. Maiga expressed satisfaction that his former chief of staff, Professor Issiaka Ahmadou Singare, aged 80, is being prosecuted without detention in the same case.

Maiga, who served as Mali's prime minister from July 2021 to November 2024, played a significant role in the country's transitional process. His arrest is connected to his responsibilities while simultaneously serving as prime minister and chairman of the board of directors of the Agency for the Management of the Universal Access Fund (AGEFAU). He was dismissed by General Assimi Goita after publicly criticizing the transition's management during a rally organized by the June 5 Movement - Rally of Patriotic Forces (M5-RFP).
