EU, NATO Condemn Alleged Russian Violation of Estonian Airspace

Brussels: EU leaders and NATO have voiced strong condemnation following an alleged violation of Estonia's airspace by Russian military aircraft on Friday. "Today's violation of Estonia's airspace by Russian military aircraft is an extremely dangerous provocation. This marks the third such violation of EU airspace in days and further escalates tensions in the region," stated EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on the social media platform, X. Kallas emphasized that Moscow is testing the "West's resolve" and urged states to avoid showing "weakness."

According to Anadolu Agency, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged a determined response to every "provocation" and stressed the importance of investing in a stronger Eastern flank. "As threats escalate, so too will our pressure. I call on EU leaders to swiftly approve our 19th sanctions package," von der Leyen declared on X. NATO's spokesperson also noted on X that the alliance responded "immediately" by intercepting the Russian aircraft, with Allison Hart highlighting the incident as another example of reckless Russian behavior and NATO's readiness to respond.

In related reactions, British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper affirmed the UK's support for Estonia following "yet another reckless incursion into NATO airspace." Germany's Foreign Ministry echoed this sentiment, stating: "Vigilance is the price of freedom. Russia's unacceptable violation of Estonian airspace today has shown that this principle of NATO is now more relevant than ever. Estonia and my colleague @Tsahkna have Germany's full solidarity."

Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen described the violation as 'dangerous and reckless,' reiterating Finland's commitment to weakening Russia, supporting Ukraine, and bolstering European deterrence and defense. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte reported having a conversation with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, emphasizing that "NATO's response under Eastern Sentry was quick and decisive."

Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel condemned the move, stating, "Once again, Russia is violating NATO airspace. The Netherlands condemns Russia's reckless behavior. We stand in full solidarity with our ally Estonia." Moreover, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics advocated for transforming NATO's Baltic air policing mission into a full air defense mission, showing solidarity with Estonia.

Lithuanian presidential adviser Kestutis Budrys warned that Russia was 'testing NATO's limits,' asserting that these are not mere accidents but military tests of the Alliance. He called for sharpening NATO's posture to deter such provocations. Croatia's Foreign Ministry expressed concern over the incursion, labeling it a 'serious threat' and pledging solidarity with Estonia.

The incident occurred when three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets allegedly entered Estonian airspace near Vaindloo Island without permission, reportedly staying for nearly 12 minutes. Estonia's Foreign Ministry reported the incident, noting that the aircraft had no flight plans, transponders were off, and there was no communication with Estonian air traffic services.

In response, Estonia summoned the charge d'affaires of the Russian Federation to lodge a formal protest. Russia has yet to respond to these claims. Meanwhile, Romania's Defense Ministry reported another incident involving a Russian drone entering its airspace during an attack on Ukraine, underscoring the rising tensions along NATO's eastern border. Poland also reported similar incidents last week, where drones crossed into its airspace during Russian attacks on Ukraine, although Russia claims these incursions were not deliberate.
