Germany Presses Israel for Humanitarian Access to Gaza at UN Assembly

New york: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, during his address to the UN General Assembly on Saturday, reiterated an "urgent call" on Israel to allow safe humanitarian access into the Gaza Strip. "We repeat our urgent call on Israel to allow safe humanitarian access," Wadephul said, reaffirming Germany's commitment to providing aid through partners such as the UN to reach those in greatest need.

According to Anadolu Agency, Wadephul emphasized that justice requires every human being to have access to food, clean water, education, and healthcare. As he described the ongoing conflict in Gaza, he referred to it as "hell on earth" and a "humanitarian nightmare," calling for an end to the war and the release of hostages. He stressed the importance of a future that includes peace and dignity for all in the Middle East, asserting that the "two states for two peoples" solution remains the "only solution."

Wadephul also highlighted the dire humanitarian crisis in Sudan and its neighboring countries, where over 30 million people are in need of aid and more than 12 million have been displaced. He urged the international community to intensify efforts to resolve this tragedy, underscoring the risk to the entire region's security.

Regarding Iran, Wadephul declared that the country must never acquire a nuclear weapon due to its non-compliance with the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He announced the re-imposition of sanctions following a Security Council vote, but noted that Germany remains open to negotiating a new agreement, emphasizing the potential for diplomacy to continue.
