Philippines: At least five people were reported dead after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit the Philippines on Tuesday, according to ABS-CBN News. A sports complex collapsed in northern Cebu during a basketball game, resulting in several casualties and injuries.
According to Anadolu Agency, four of the casualties were part of the team responding to the collapse of the complex. Among the deceased were a Bureau of Fire Protection personnel and three Philippine Coast Guard members, as stated by Police Capt. Jan Ace Elcid Layug. The fifth casualty was a child who was trapped in rubble at a separate location.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially determined the epicenter of the quake, which struck at 1359GMT on Tuesday with a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), to be in the northern Cebu region. USGS later adjusted the magnitude from 7.0 to 6.9 on the Richter scale.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued a tsunami warning, which was subsequently lifted. The Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Bantayan Island suffered a collapse during the earthquake. Additionally, a fast-food chain building partially collapsed in Bogo in the Cebu region.
Classes at schools were suspended for Wednesday in several parts of Cebu, including Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue, Talisay, Minglanilla, Consolacion, and Liloan. An ammonia leak at a beverage plant in Mandaue was contained by firefighters after the tremor, with responders on standby for potential resident evacuations.
Casualties were also reported in the San Remigio municipality of Cebu, which has declared a state of calamity due to the widespread damage in the area.
