Washington: The Trump administration is set to withdraw funding from the Council of Inspectors General, a federal watchdog group responsible for overseeing government waste and misconduct, effective Wednesday. This move, as reported by various media outlets, could have significant implications for the integrity and efficiency of federal oversight.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE) plays a crucial role in providing training, data analysis, and investigative tools to federal oversight employees. The removal of its funding is expected to severely impact inspectors general, potentially leaving them without essential infrastructure to detect waste, fraud, and abuse across government agencies.
CIGIE operates as an independent entity within the executive branch, focusing on addressing issues of integrity, economy, and effectiveness that go beyond individual government agencies. A notice on the council's website states, "Due to a lack of apportionment of funds, this website is currently unavailable."
A representative from the White House Office of Management and Budget informed CBS News that some inspector generals have become "corrupt, partisan, and, in some cases, have lied to the public," prompting the decision to cease funding. "The American people will no longer be funding this corruption," the spokesman added.
Former CIGIE chair Mark Greenblatt expressed concerns over the funding cuts, suggesting they would leave inspectors "isolated" and "severely compromised." Mike Ware, a former inspector general for the Small Business Administration, echoed these sentiments, indicating that the move would dismantle essential transparency platforms.
The decision has sparked rare bipartisan criticism. Republican senators Chuck Grassley and Susan Collins, in a letter referenced by CBS News, warned that the funding withdrawal would result in furloughed CIGIE staff and the termination of oversight programs. They have urged the administration to provide an explanation and to reverse the decision by Friday, stating, "We urgently request an explanation for these actions and ask that you promptly reverse course."
