Copenhagen: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for robust support for the European Union accession of Ukraine, Moldova, and Western Balkan countries, emphasizing the need for progress in their EU membership journey. Zelenskyy made these remarks during an address at the European Political Community meeting.
According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy highlighted that Ukraine has completed its screening process related to EU accession negotiations and is prepared to initiate discussions on Cluster 1, which centers on the fundamental aspects of the accession process. Ukraine began formal accession talks with the EU in June 2024, following its candidate status recognition in 2022 amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Moldova, alongside Ukraine, holds candidate status, while multiple Western Balkan nations are navigating various stages of the EU enlargement process. Zelenskyy expressed concern over recent drone incursions in Europe, asserting that these incidents indicate Russia's continued boldness in escalating the conflict.
The Ukrainian president emphasized that Russia's actions are not solely directed at Ukraine but are part of a broader strategy to destabilize Europe. He urged European nations to unite against Russia's attempts to sow division and prevent consensus among them.
Zelenskyy also proposed the establishment of a 'drone wall' along the EU's eastern border, arguing that recent drone activities against Poland and Northern European countries highlight a broader threat to the continent. He stressed the need for a swift and effective response to such security challenges.
Additionally, Zelenskyy encouraged participation in the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, a program launched by NATO and Washington in August, aimed at supporting Kyiv and strengthening Europe-US ties. He called for increased sanctions against Russia and the completion of work concerning Ukraine's security guarantees.
