Ankara: The US President Donald Trump arrived in Egypt's Red Sea city of Sharm el-Sheikh from Israel to attend an international peace summit focused on the Gaza Strip. He was welcomed by Egyptian President Abdel Fatath al-Sisi upon his arrival, as shown by live footage.

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump and Sisi will co-chair the summit, which is attended by leaders from more than 20 countries. The primary aims of the summit are to solidify the ceasefire and advance post-war reconstruction efforts in Gaza. This meeting follows a significant exchange where the Palestinian group Hamas released 20 living Israeli hostages in return for nearly 2,000 prisoners, marking the first phase of a Gaza ceasefire plan.

Last week, Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first phase of his plan, initially proposed on September 29, to bring a ceasefire to Gaza. The plan involves the release of all Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the entire Gaza Strip. The first phase of the deal was implemented on Friday.

The second phase of the plan includes establishing a new governing mechanism in Gaza without Hamas' involvement, forming a multinational force, and disarming Hamas. Since October 2023, Israeli attacks have resulted in over 67,800 Palestinian deaths in the enclave, with most casualties being women and children, leaving the area largely uninhabitable.
