Washington: US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured him that India will halt its purchases of Russian crude oil. Trump emphasized that if India continued these purchases, it would face 'massive tariffs.'

According to Anadolu Agency, Trump made these remarks while speaking to reporters on his return to Washington. He mentioned his recent conversation with Modi regarding India's energy imports from Russia. "I spoke with Prime Minister Modi of India, and he said he's not going to be doing the Russian oil thing," Trump stated to the press.

Trump further warned that if India opts to continue its Russian oil transactions, it would be subject to substantial tariffs, which he implied India would prefer to avoid. Since 2022, India has become one of Russia's significant energy customers, benefiting from discounted crude oil despite Western sanctions against Moscow.
