Russia: Russia's state communications watchdog announced it is tightening restrictions on WhatsApp, alleging that the US-owned platform violates Russian law and facilitates criminal activities, as reported by the Tass news agency.

According to Anadolu Agency, Roskomnadzor, the federal executive body responsible for overseeing media and communications, stated that WhatsApp continues to breach Russian legal requirements. The agency claims that the messaging app is being used to organize unlawful actions, recruit individuals for illegal activities, and perpetrate fraud against Russian citizens.

Roskomnadzor emphasized that WhatsApp has not implemented the necessary measures demanded by local laws to prevent and counter criminal offenses. The agency has already introduced limitations since August, which have reportedly reduced the quality of WhatsApp calls. This gradual rollout is intended to encourage users to transition to alternative services.

The regulator has recommended that users shift to 'national platforms' and warned that the app could face a complete block if it does not comply with Russian regulations. In recent years, Russia has increased pressure on foreign digital platforms, enforcing fines, access restrictions, and data storage requirements. Previous measures have targeted major global tech companies for alleged non-compliance with domestic laws.
