Doha: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates emphasized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) on creativity, education, healthcare, and economic development during his address at the Doha Forum 2025. He highlighted the importance of early adoption in shaping the future of technology while stressing the necessity for Africa to be actively involved in this technological revolution.
According to Anadolu Agency, Gates compared AI's universal impact to that of critical inventions such as chips, electricity, and advanced medicines, noting that its significance lies not in replication but in innovative application. He stated that those who engage with AI early will be at the forefront of creativity. Gates underscored Africa's potential, given its youthful population, to contribute novel ideas to this evolving landscape.
Gates elaborated on AI's influence across artistic and creative domains, including film, photography, writing, and design. He indicated that the emergence of foundational AI models would likely continue in the US and China, owing to their scientific prowess. Nevertheless, global accessibility is expected due to open-source capabilities and competitive commercial tools.
He also highlighted AI's promise in improving public services in low-income regions, particularly in Africa, where his foundation focuses much of its efforts. Gates described how AI could enable access to virtual healthcare and agricultural support, offering farmers AI-generated advice on crucial aspects such as soil quality and weather, potentially transforming agriculture into a significant economic driver in Africa.
Reflecting on the mission of the Gates Foundation, Gates pointed to their efforts in combating diseases and conditions that disproportionately affect children, such as malaria and malnutrition. He emphasized the foundation's commitment to eradicating malaria and highlighted the severe impact of malnutrition on child development.
Gates concluded by stressing the importance of equitable AI access, particularly for young people in the Global South, noting the innovative potential within Africa to lead global advancements in AI application.
